Unofficial Cycle Routes - East Kilbride to King’s Park

Website by Andy Preece

This route connects East Kilbride to King's Park, and connects with another unofficial cycle route into Glasgow to lead to Glasgow Green. It starts by following Sustrans National Cycle Network Route 756 to the edge of East Kilbride.

Starting from East Kilbride station, cross West Mains Road and follow the NCN 756 cycle route signs for Glasgow until the edge of the town. This takes you through some housing onto a path next to a car park, then onto a railway path. At the end of the railway path, turn left onto The Gateway, then right onto Mavor Avenue.

At the top of Mavor Avenue, go straight on through the roundabout into the retail park. Turn left into the retail park car park, then right to head over to the shop units, where there is a path between the units through to Stewartfield Way. Cross Stewartfield Way at the Toucan Crossing, and head right along the shared use footway, still signed for Glasgow. Cross the entrance to the Kingsgate Retail Park at the Toucan Crossing and continue onto Glasgow Road.

At the next set of lights, where the cycle route turns right to cross Glasgow Road, head straight on past the crossing and then left into the second entrance to the Kingsgate Retail Park. Rejoin the carriageway here and, with care, immediately turn right onto a road signed for lorries. Immediately fork right onto Nerston Road, which is signed with only derestriction signs. Continue to follow Nerston Road, forking right again at a second junction. At the end of the road there is a crossroads with Markethill Road. Turn right here onto the main road, then left into Cairnmuir Road at the next junction, where the main road veers sharply right.

Take the first road on the right past the electricity substation. Continue along this road past some farms, until it joins Cathkin Road, at a junction on a bend, next to the Cathkin Braes. With care, join the cycle track on the right-hand side of this road at the first bend after this junction, next to a gate into the parkland.

Follow the cycle track into Carmunnock village and continue straight on into Gallowhill Road at the end of the cycle track. Continue to the end of this road and turn right into Windlaw Road. Continue onto the path at the end of the road and follow this through to Castlemilk.

At the end, cross Ardencraig Road and head straight on into Birgidale Road. At the bottom of this road, turn left into Dougrie Road, then right into Carmunnock Road side road immediately before the traffic lights at the junction with the main road. Follow this traffic-calmed road carefully downhill, and at the bottom of the hill, go around the bend then turn left and cross straight across Croftfoot Road into Thorncroft Drive. At the far end turn right into Croftpark Avenue.

To go into King’s Park, turn through the gate on the left after the traffic-calming island. Fork right immediately inside the park gate, then gradually curve left, towards Aikenhead House in the centre of the park. Turn right alongside the house, then fork left to head up and over the hill to Menock Road. Take care descending this steep hill. King’s Park station is across the road from the park entrance.
