Unofficial Cycle Routes - East Kilbride to Glasgow Green

Website by Andy Preece

This route connects East Kilbride to Kittochside, Carmunnock, Castlemilk, King's Park, Toryglen and Glasgow Green, connecting with the unofficial cycle route to Pollok Park. The route starts off using paths and roads within East Kilbride, but then switches to country lanes until Carmunnock, before using another path to get to Castlemilk. Local roads connect to King's Park and Glasgow Green. The unofficial cycle route from Strathclyde Park connects into this route.

Starting from the Birniehill Roundabout, take the path alongside the north side of Queensway. At the Murray Roundabout turn left into the underpass, right at the cycle roundabout, then left after exiting through the underpass. Take the footpath rather than the cycle path to avoid ending up on the main carriageway of Queensway. Pass the town centre and turn left into the underpass at the next roundabout, the Righead Roundabout. Turn right at the cycle roundabout, then left after exiting via the underpass. A short distance up this path fork right and join the carriageway of Falkland Park. Go straight on and turn left into Falkland Drive. On arrival at the sharp bend to the right fork left onto the path parallel to Queensway. Continue on this path until just before the filling station where there is a path on the right linking to Kirktonholme Road.

Take the path and turn right onto the ramp down to the road, to avoid the steps that are straight on. Turn left onto the road and continue over the railway bridge. Turn left at the end into West Mains Road. Turn second right into Arrotshole Road, after the traffic signals. Turn first left into Glenburn Road, then turn right where there are "No Entry" signs straight on into the continuation of Glenburn Road.

Continue along this road past the Glen Road junction, then turn left at a roundabout into Castleglen Road. At the end of this road go straight on at the main roundabout, then right at the mini-roundabout at the new Visitors' Centre car park.

This road, Glen Road, heads out into the country. Go straight on into Kittochside Road at Kittochside, then on arriving in Carmunnock, turn right into Waterside Road. This leads to the centre of Carmunnock Village. Continue to the centre of the village and take the second right (the first being a 'No Entry' road), then fork right into Windlaw Road where the main road veers left. At the end of this road carry straight on along the path to reach Castlemilk.

On arrival at Castlemilk, cross Ardencraig Road and continue straight on into Birgidale Road. Turn left at the end of this road into Dougrie Road. Turn right into the side road section of Carmunnock Road, just before the traffic signals at the main road junction. Follow this road down the steep hill. Either cross the main road on the left at the traffic signals to follow the unofficial cycle route to Cathcart and Pollok Park or stay on the access road to continue heading for Glasgow Green. Turn right at the corner at the bottom of the hill and take the immediate left turn at the junction to head out to the main road. Cross straight over Croftfoot Road into Thorncroft Drive. At the end, turn right into Croftpark Avenue. Pass the next junction on the right, then look out for the small gate into King's Park on the left. Go through this gate into the park.

Fork right immediately inside the park gate, then gradually curve left, towards Aikenhead House in the centre of the park. Turn right alongside the house, then fork left to head up and over a hill. Once at the top, take care on the descent to the park gate at Menock Road, opposite King's Park Station.

From the park gate, head straight across Menock Road, past the station entrance, straight across King's Park Avenue into Kingsbridge Drive. Take the first left into Kingshouse Avenue, and follow this round past one junction, then it merges with Kingswood Drive. Take the next turning on the right, Ardmay Crescent, and the next right Fintry Drive. Follow this road straight on across into Kerrycroy Avenue, and continue until the far end. At the end, head straight across the footway to get to the Pelican Crossing across Prospecthill Road. Cross over and go straight along a short path to get to Prospecthill Circus. Turn left into this road and take a left fork onto a path where this road curves to the right.

Follow this path until its end at Polmadie Road. To get to Govanhill and Strathbungo go straight on down the steps to join the Glasgow City Council cycle route through Crosshill. To get to Glasgow Green turn right into Polmadie Road and continue right until the end. Cross the bridge across the River Clyde into Glasgow Green. Turn left for the City Centre and Bell's Bridge, and right for Cambuslang and Uddingston, both following the Sustrans National Cycle Network Route 75. Alternatively, continue straight on along the path to take the unofficial cycle route to Bridgeton, Dennistoun and Springburn.
