Cycle Facilities in Leverndale and Pollok

Website by Andy Preece

Leverndale has a new housing development, in the grounds of a hospital. Cycle facilities have been provided, but are of the most unimaginably inappropriate kind. Read on...

Busy Crookston Road Leverndale is accessed from Crookston Road, a busy road linking western Glasgow to Barrhead. Advance Stop Lines have been provided at random signal-controlled junctions along the road, but nothing in between. Notice how the road lane markings at the signals aren't in alignment with the older ones further back, and how the road is wide enough to have continuous cycle lanes. Not surprisingly, some cyclists decide to use the footways.
Once off Crookston Road, cyclists are directed to use the footway, where cycle tracks have been provided. This road carries much less traffic than Crookston Road, since it serves only the hospital and the new houses. This is a quiet road, compared to the previous one
A very large roundabout for such a small road The access road then comes to a large roundabout. On two sides are roads to the housing development, whilst on the third is the road to the hospital.
The cycle tracks even lead into the housing developments, but then stop abruptly, not even providing for cyclists rejoining the carriageway. Why?
A bit of a squeeze! This sign shows exactly how much contempt cyclists are held in by the developers. It blocks the cycle track completely, making a mockery of the provision (like it needs any more mockery!).
Leaving the scheme, cyclists are provided with an Advance Stop Line at the traffic signals, but those who used the cycle track will not be able to join the carriageway until they are right at the junction. Anyone wanting to turn right will have to wait until all the traffic has passed before joining the carriageway, thus rendering the Advance Stop Line useless. Someone has missed the point here!
Follow the signs Meanwhile, in nearby Pollok a signed cycle route connecting with the National Cycle Network has been provided with a surprise. Coming from the Pollok Shopping Centre along Lyoncross Road, you pick up the signs here...
...but find the road has been closed at the next junction! This closure, with Fire Path, has gone in since the signs for the cycle route, and contrary to Glasgow City Council policy, cyclists have not been exempted from the closure, despite the cycle route signs! Road Closed!
End of cycle lane! Across the other side of Pollok, Corkerhill Road has been provided with much-needed cycle lanes. However, they end rather abruptly, with no warning, just after a hump-backed bridge!
Go further north and the situation doesn't improve. Barfillan Drive has been closed, with a Fire Path provided, and no exemption for cyclists, despite council policy and the fact that it leads to a proposed cycle route. Road Closed!

If you have a cycle route that needs looked at then tell me all about it!
