Unofficial Cycle Routes - Milngavie to Kirkintilloch

Website by Andy Preece

This route starts at Milngavie, and heads uphill, before descending through the Baldernock area to Balmore, then crosses the River Kelvin to join the Forth & Clyde Canal at Cadder for the rest of the way to Kirkintilloch. The route shares much of the way with the unofficial cycle route from Strathblane. This route takes in the ford at Dougalston.

This route starts at Milngavie Station, and links with the unofficial cycle route from Anniesland and Bearsden. Exit the station car park, turn right onto Station Road, then go straight on at the A81 traffic lights into Baldernock Road. Head up the hill out of Milngavie, then go straight through the ford at Dougalston and left at the junction at Baldernock Mill.

Go straight past this strange feature - do not stop - see www.entrances2hell.co.uk Turn left at the end of the road, then right, at the staggered junction by the church. Follow this road right at a junction, then fork left at the next one following Tower Road. Take the second right, at the foot of Mealey Brae, Glenorchard Road. Follow this road down into Balmore.

Cross the A807, again taking care, and follow the local loop road, Balmore Road, until you see a green sign for a right of way to Cadder. Follow this path, crossing the River Kelvin on a footbridge with some steps at either side, then continue following the path through a golf course. The path then becomes a track and finally turns into a road as you arrive in Cadder. Turn left on reaching the Forth & Clyde Canal to continue to Kirkintilloch, Twechar and Falkirk. Alternatively, head in the opposite direction along the canal for Bishopbriggs and Glasgow.
