Unofficial Cycle Routes - Pollok to Renfrew and Braehead

Website by Andy Preece

This route links Pollok and Cardonald to Hillington and Renfrew, including links to the Renfrew-Yoker Ferry and the Braehead Shopping Centre. Cross the river on the Renfrew Ferry and you can continue along the unofficial route to Blairdardie and Milngavie. Alternatively, stay on the south side of the river and follow the unofficial cycle route back to Glasgow.

Braehead Shopping Centre cycle parking

Starting from the Pollok Centre car park, exit onto Barrhead Road and cross, either at the traffic signals or via the footbridge, into Carnock Road. There is a council cycle route to Bellahouston Park and Pollok Park via Damshot Road, but this route takes the road one west of this, Maidland Road, and heads northwest. Go up Maidland Road and go straight on into Levernside Road. This road becomes Lyoncross Road and at the end turn left into Linthaugh Road. Turn right from here onto a small path that leads to a footbridge over the river. Cross the river and turn right into Moulin Circus. Exit this small estate over the railway bridge which is Cardonald Place Road. Carry straight on across Paisley Road West into Tweedsmuir Road.

Go up the hill and fork left at the shops along Gladsmuir Road. At the far end of this road turn left, then fork right down a ramp and cross Sandwood Road at the Toucan Crossing. Turn right, go under the railway bridge and turn left into Queen Elizabeth Avenue. Turn right into Montrose Avenue which leads through Hillington Industrial Estate. About half way along this road is a right fork, Huntly Road, which leads towards Braehead Shopping Centre. Carry straight on for Renfrew.

To get to Renfrew, take the last left at the end of Montrose Avenue into Stephenson Street, turn right at the end into Atholl Avenue, left then right into Arkleston Road, then cross the M8 motorway on the footbridge. This leads to Cockels Loan in Renfrew. Turn right along Cockels Loan and turn left into Haining Road once you've gone past the park. Turn second right into Sandy Road. At the end of Sandy Road, turn left then immediately right into Queen Street (or to head for the Renfrewshire Council Renfrew to Glasgow Airport cycle route, turn left from Sandy Road, then head straight on along to the end of Glebe Street, then right and immediately left into Inchinnan Road to get to the start of the route at Robertson Park). Turn left into High Street for the town centre and then right into Canal Street which becomes Ferry Road for the Renfrew-Yoker Ferry. (If coming from the ferry carry straight on from Canal Street into Hairst Street, turn next left into Glebe Street and then third right into Sandy Road.)

To get to Braehead, head along Huntly Road and at the end turn left. Follow this main road through the M8 motorway junction roundabout, the Glasgow Road roundabout and head straight on along King's Inch Road. Take care turning right at the big roundabout to get to the shopping centre or carry on to the next roundabout and turn right there. There are lots of cycle parking stands all around the shopping centre, albeit of a strange design.
