This route connects with the South Lanarkshire Council East Kilbride to Strathaven official cycle route and to the unofficial cycle routes from Strathclyde Park to Coatbridge or Bellshill, and Uddingston to Motherwell. The route follows minor roads through the countryside then traffic-calmed roads into Hamilton. The route then crosses Hamilton Town Centre to get to Strathclyde Park. There is also a branch to Larkhall.
From the centre of Strathaven, Common Green, head north and turn right at the traffic signals. Follow the main road round to the left, then turn right at the next traffic signals, signposted for Hamilton and Glassford. Go straight on along Glassford Road at the following junction, signposted Glassford, where the main road to Hamilton turns left.
Once out of Strathaven continue along the road until you arrive in Glassford. Turn left at the T-junction at the end of Millar Street, then cross over the adjacent mini-roundabout, into Larkhall Road, signposted for Larkhall and Quarter. Again follow this road straight on. The road is joined by the proposed Sustrans National Cycle Network Route 74 at a junction next to an old railway bridge.
If you wish to go to Larkhall, turn right into Broomelton Road at the next junction, which is signposted for there. Otherwise carry straight on. Continue through Quarter, and on until you reach the edge of Hamilton.
On arrival in Hamilton turn right next to the bus shelters into the housing scheme, the last turning before reaching the roundabout with the A723. Turn immediately left into High Peaks Crescent and follow this round to the right. Fork left into Devonhill Avenue at a triangular junction, then turn right into Chriss Avenue at a T-junction. Follow this road round to the left. At the next T-junction, turn right into Newlands Drive, which becomes Silvertonhill Avenue. Follow this road for some distance, through a traffic-calmed zone next to a school, then follow the main road left into Johnstone Road. Fork right at the mini-roundabout onto the A723 Portland Place, into Hamilton Town Centre.
To get to Hamilton Central station, take the first left, Quarry Street, then turn right around the block to get into Kemp Street which is now one-way, where the Glasgow-bound platform is accessed via a ramp, otherwise continue past the station sign on the main road and turn left to enter the other side of the station. To continue to Strathclyde Park, continue on the main road until the traffic signals at the junction with the A724.
At the traffic signals, the way to Strathclyde Park is straight on through the pedestrian precinct. Stop at the traffic island separating the left and right turning traffic and use the pedestrian crossing to get to the far side of the junction and into the pedestrian precinct. Follow the precinct, and cross a road to continue into the next section of the precinct, Castle Street. Continue beyond the end of the precinct, and go straight on at the A72 roundabout into Mote Hill. Go straight on then right into Mausoleum Drive. This becomes a path and leads through an underpass under the M74 motorway, and on into Strathclyde Park.
Once in Strathclyde Park and at the shore of Strathclyde Loch, turn left to head towards Bothwell, or right to head towards Motherwell. It is possible to cycle right round the loch, following the lochside path. The Visitors' Centre is located near the path from Hamilton, and contains a café.
