Unofficial Cycle Routes - Strathclyde Park to Cleland

Website by Andy Preece

This route takes a mainly off-road and quiet road route from Strathclyde Park to Cleland, passing through the Dalzell Estate and parts of Motherwell and Wishaw. The route starts with some short flights of steps, but then takes a step-free route through the Dalzell Estate. This route connects with the unofficial cycle routes from Coatbridge, Uddingston and Bellshill to Strathclyde Park.

Leave Strathclyde Park by heading along the road from the Visitors’ Centre, towards Motherwell. Opposite the pebble beach, take the path that branches off on the right towards the River Clyde. To go under the A723 Hamilton Road bridge there is a short flight of shallow steps down, then another up on the other side. There is also another short flight of shallow steps upwards on the path a short distance beyond. This brings you to a residential lane, Prentice Road. Follow this and turn right at the marker post onto another path. One last flight of steps leads down to the Clyde Walkway path.

Follow the path for a couple of miles until you come to a junction with a kissing gate across the path ahead. Turn left on the path signposted for Dalzell Estate and an unspecified railway station. At the next signposted junction turn left across the stream and follow the track right up a steep and loosely surfaced hill. Continue along this road when the surface changes to tarmac, and pass through a walled cutting.

Look out for a path on the right with two rectangular bollards. Turn right onto this path and follow it straight on, passing Dalzell House, and continue to the park gatehouse at Muirhouse. Exit the park at the Doonside High Flats, then immediately turn right up a path to the main road, Shields Road. Cross over the dual carriageway and enter a smaller park, Shields Glen Public Park. Follow the path on the left hand side of the stream, staying near the top of the valley. This leads out to some open space and playing fields. Cross over to the right of the playing fields and join Muirhouse Avenue. Turn left just at the right-hand bend along a path between some new housing.

Follow this path, crossing a road, then continue straight on onto a path to Shieldmuir railway station. Cross over the railway on the ramped footbridge, and continue straight on along John Street. Cross the main road, Shieldmuir Street, and take Glencairn Avenue, on your right. This road gently curves left and ends at a small railway bridge. Go under the bridge and turn second right along a path that leads through some woodland. Follow the path past a school and onto a lane behind Grampian Road, then continue straight on onto Main Street. (Due to the poor state of the above path you may wish to take the first path on the right after the railway bridge which is tarmac and leads to the school back gate, pass across the grass to the right of the school into a lane, turn left onto Pentland Road, follow this round to the right into Grampian Way, then left at the end and right immediately after into Main Street.)

On reaching the town centre in Wishaw, turn sharp left, where the road ahead is closed, into Glen Road. Follow this right to the end and pass through the barrier gate into a park. Keep heading along the track, cross the bridge over the South Calder Water, and continue up the hill on the other side. This track leads to Cleland. Continue straight on along Wishaw Low Road and into Main Street. To continue to Bellside and onwards towards Shotts, keep going straight on, including at the busy A73 roundabout where extreme care should be taken. Alternatively, to head back to Motherwell along main roads, turn left at the mini-roundabout into Omoa Road to take the B7029 road to Carfin. At the end of that, turn left for the A723 Merry Street to Motherwell.
