This route starts from George Square in Glasgow and heads out through Sighthill and Springburn to Bishopbriggs. From Bishopbriggs Town Centre it is possible to carry on to the Sports Centre and the Forth & Clyde Canal. See also the unofficial cycle route to Cumbernauld and Kilsyth which shares the first part of this route and the links from the West End through either Woodside or Ruchill.
From George Square head up North Hanover Street past Glasgow Queen Street Station. Believe it or not, it used to be illegal to cycle up this section of North Hanover Street. However, persistant campaigning by local cycle group Go Bike got the bus lane rules changed here. Carry on up North Hanover Street, passing Buchanan Bus Station, until it becomes Kyle Street. Where the main road turns right into Baird Street, carry straight on, and go up the ramp onto the footbridge over the M8 motorway.
From here you can turn right for the Glasgow City Council Glasgow to Cumbernauld cycle route, turn left for the unofficial cycle route to Woodside and the West End or fork right for Sighthill. Taking the last option, go over the hill and then cross the footbridge over Pinkston Road. Follow the main path through Sighthill, passing between the Pinkston and Fountainwell High Flats, until you reach the Springburn Expressway. Cross the expressway at the traffic signals and turn left. Note: for the time being it is illegal to cycle on the footway next to this expressway. However, Glasgow City Council plans to alter this as part of its Glasgow Cycle Network proposals. Go up alongside the expressway, crossing St Rollox Brae and Petershill Road, and turn right at the next main road, Atlas Road.
Go along Atlas Road until Springburn Station and turn left into Springburn Way (after the Pelican Crossing). Pass the shops and go under the narrow Hawthorn Street bridge. Fork left into Lenzie Terrace, and follow this road as it changes names right up to the end. Go up the slope into Stobhill Road and head north along the main road, Balgrayhill Road. Fork right at the mini-roundabout into Auchinairn Road. Take the first left into Crowhill Road. This road leads to Bishopbriggs Town Centre, with a small one-way system around Bishopbriggs Station.
To continue to Bishopbriggs Sports Centre and the Forth & Clyde Canal, cross the main road at the traffic signals and go straight into Kenmure Avenue. Take the second right into Kenmure Drive. Carry on along the path at the end of this road, and turn right across the bridge over the stream further on. Climb up the hill to Keir Drive, turning left at the end into Balmuildy Road (this road can be quite busy at times with school traffic). Turn left where Balmuildy Road turns left and continue along it to reach the sports centre and canal bridge where left is for Glasgow and right takes you towards Kirkintilloch and Falkirk.
