Unofficial Cycle Routes - Anniesland to Bearsden

Website by Andy Preece

This route isn't terribly direct, but does avoid the extremely busy Switchback Road which connects Anniesland to Bearsden and Milngavie. The route follows the old Knightswood Mineral (or Temple Sawmills) railway line to start with, then runs parallel to the Westerton to Milngavie railway on local streets. From Milngavie there are the unofficial cycle routes to Strathblane and Kirkintilloch, or you could visit Mugdock Country Park.

Starting from Anniesland Cross, get to Crow Road on the north side of Great Western Road, either via the pedestrian crossing near Crow Road, or by using Hershall Street and Foulis Lane to get from near Anniesland Station. Head north on Crow Road until you get to the supermarket car park. Turn left here, cross Bearsden Road and go into Glencoe Street, the side street on the far side with the Fire Path onto Bearsden Road. From Glencoe Street, enter the park on the left and follow the main path as it curves to the right. Pass under a road bridge and past the library to join Shafton Road. Turn right along this road and go straight on into Avenel Road at the minor cross roads.

At the end of this street, cross over the canal on the footbridge with steps. Turn left before getting to Westerton Station onto Almond Road. Turn right off this road where there is a small bridge under the railway. Go under the bridge and take the left of the two paths, which leads to Allender Road. At the end of this road, follow the bend left, turn first right and then right again into the main Canniesburn Road. Take the first left and immediate right, Tweed Drive. Turn right at the end of this road and join the path alongside the edge of the park. Turn right under the railway bridge, then left, and follow this road to Bearsden Station.

To continue to Milngavie, turn left at the station onto the main Drymen Road, right at the traffic signals into Roman Road and left at the far end into Milngavie Road. This road has cycle lanes which lead to Milngavie. At the town centre (old shops in the precinct on the left, a large supermarket and Milngavie Station on the right) turn left at the traffic signals up a minor road, Ellangowan Road, which goes under a bridge under the precinct to head along the unofficial cycle route to Strathblane or to get to Mugdock Country Park. Alternatively, go straight on at the traffic lights to go to the station or the unofficial cycle route to Kirkintilloch.
